Because sometimes it's not whether you win or lose; it's how you play the game -- or whether you play at all.
February 15-21, 2008
Saskatchewan skip Michelle Englot curled in her eighth national championship, while grieving the loss of her father. Joe Englot died suddenly, the night before the opening festivities. He was 74.
Grace and Courage
Throughout the week, in games and interviews, Michelle showed tremendous grace and courage. She also played better than anyone had any right to expect, winning 5 of 11 games, including one against the world champions.
Awesome
This blog celebrates the awesome performance of Team Saskatchewan, and their incredible skip, Michelle Englot.
Family

Memories
"I learned to play with my dad in club curling out in Montmartre. He used to let me skip and he was very hard on me, but I think that's why I am where I am today." -- Michelle Englot
"He was a silent man and I'll bet it was hard on his nerves at times, but he was also very supportive. I think in her heart that she knows he's here. We're playing for him and we know that he's watching." -- Roberta Materi
Tributes
"Michelle has been incredible. To be able to deal with what she has to do, she has been fantastic." -- Cindy Simmons
"I don't know if I could do what she's doing. I don't think I'd have the guts and courage to do it." -- Mary Anne Arsenault
"She's just a great competitor. She's just a good lady." -- Lorie Kehler
"I've always had so much respect for her. Now I respect her more ... She is setting such a wonderful example for her family by doing the most difficult thing that she has ever done." -- Nancy Delahunt
"She was a perfect 11-0 and when it’s all said and done, Englot’s week will be all we remember from the 2008 Scotties." -- Murray McCormick
Plans
"They are some of my best friends and I can only believe this can make us closer as a team." -- Michelle Englot
This blog would not have been possible without the unwitting assistance of Murray McCormick, Rob Vanstone, Bryan Schlosser, and all the other fine writers and photographers whose work appears on these pages. Thank you all for your excellent work.
It would not have been possible without material from the Regina Leader-Post, the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, the Moose Jaw Times Herald, and Regina's News Talk 980. Thank you for making your coverage available on the net.
Finally, it would not have been possible without the wonderful play of some exceptional curlers, not only this year but in the past. Many thanks to Michelle Englot, Darlene Kidd, Roberta Materi, Cindy Simmons, Lorie Kehler, Joan Stricker, and coach Anita Ford.
Condolences
Heartfelt sympathy and sincere best wishes to Norma Englot; to her children: Mallory, Michelle, Nissa and Norman; to their families and their friends, and to all who celebrate the life and mourn the passing of Joe Englot.
